ISPM 15 (International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is an international regulation designed to prevent the spread of plant diseases and pests through international trade in wood and wood products. This standard requires that all wood packaging used to transport goods be treated to eliminate any risk of infestation by insects or plant diseases.

What is ISPM 15?

ISPM 15 was developed by the International Plant Protection Organization (IPPO) in response to growing concerns about the spread of plant pests through international trade in wood and wood products. It was first adopted in 2002 and is now recognized as the international standard for wood packaging. ISPM 15 requires that all wood packaging used for the transport of goods be treated in such a way as to eliminate any risk of infestation by insects or plant diseases. This requirement applies to all types of wood packaging, including pallets, crates, boxes, crates, drums and containers.

What treatments are accepted by ISPM 15?

ISPM 15 authorizes two types of treatment for wood packaging: heat treatment and chemical treatment. Heat treatment involves subjecting wood packaging to a minimum temperature of 56°C for a minimum period of 30 minutes. This treatment is carried out in specially designed treatment chambers. Our boxes and cases are heat-treated. Chemical treatment involves treating wooden packaging with approved chemicals, such as methyl bromide. This treatment must be carried out by approved companies and in compliance with the regulations in force in each country.

How are wooden crates treated according to ISPM 15?

Wooden crates must be treated in accordance with the requirements of ISPM 15 before being used for the international transport of goods. Wooden crate manufacturers must comply with these regulations, and must be able to provide treatment certificates attesting that their products comply with ISPM 15. Heat treatment is the most common method used to treat wooden crates in compliance with ISPM 15. Wooden crates are placed in a specially designed treatment chamber, where they are subjected to a minimum temperature of 56°C for a minimum of 30 minutes. This operation kills all insects and diseases present in the wood. Once the wooden crates have been treated in accordance with ISPM 15, they must be labelled with a special mark indicating that the treatment has been carried out and that they comply with the standard. This label must be clearly visible on the packaging and must contain the necessary information to identify the manufacturer, the type of treatment carried out and the date of treatment.

Why is ISPM 15 important?

The ISPM 15 standard is important for several reasons. Firstly, it helps prevent the spread of plant diseases and pests through international trade in wood and wood products. Insects and plant diseases can have devastating effects on local ecosystems and the agricultural, forestry and horticultural industries. Secondly, ISPM 15 helps harmonize wood packaging regulations and practices worldwide. By adopting a common standard for the treatment of wood packaging, it is easier for manufacturers, exporters and importers to comply with the regulations in force in each country. Finally, ISPM 15 is important because it ensures that wood packaging used for the international transport of goods is safe and complies with international standards. This helps to ensure the quality of the products transported, and to protect the health and safety of workers handling wood packaging.
